Between the hard floor and a comfortable bed, many people choose the latter if they want to rest. However, the habit may change after finding out the spiritual benefits of sleeping on the floor.
Many cultures have started embracing the practice, which is similar to how ancient people who lived in caves had to sleep on hard surfaces.
Sleep in itself, no matter where you do it, is considered a spiritual practice often overlooked.
Science has shown how good sleep could enhance your problem-solving and learning skills. It improves your focus and motivates you to become more creative and productive.
You become happier, more receptive to your surroundings, and more inspired when well-rested because it makes your body stronger.
Sleep As a Spiritual Practice
It is common knowledge how lack of sleep can cause various physical conditions, including weak immunity, migraines, high blood pressure, and more.
But did you know that it can also affect you on a spiritual level by blocking your intuition, creativity and power?
Your body heals itself when you sleep, so when you don’t get enough rest or find it hard to get a good doze often, your energy field becomes weak, and you feel blocked as if you are losing your power.
Energy vibration flows all over your body. It is a vessel that contains power and energy. You become happier, more receptive to your surroundings, and more inspired when well-rested because it makes your body stronger.
Having a good sleep can help you live in alignment, tap into your intuitive guidance, and attract whatever your heart and mind desire.
Arianna Huffington, author, and co-founder of The Huffington Post Media Group, said in an interview (watch below) that many people become sleep deprived because they thought that sleep was optional; that they could only achieve something or succeed in life when they sacrifice sleep.
This thinking resulted in an increase in the numbers of people suffering from sleep deprivation in terms of happiness, mental health, productivity, and health.
In her book, The Sleep Revolution, she had a dedicated chapter talking about the mystery of sleep, dreams, and how sleep can lead people to the more spiritual dimension of themselves.
But one can only get to that point if they change their mind about the essence of sleep.
Spiritual Importance Of Sleeping On the Floor
Many of those who have developed the practice of sleeping on the floor would agree that it helps them connect to their spirituality and themselves.
Here are some of the spiritual gains you may benefit from once you begin sleeping on the floor:
1. It Can Make You More Motivated and Productive
Your circadian rhythm reaches its perfect working condition while lying on the ground since your body is in its natural state.
This rhythm is tied to your body clock 24/7, and it is something that is not exclusive to humans but exists in most living things.
Your circadian rhythm controls when you sleep and wake up. It is affected by factors such as light and dark.
By keeping the rhythm in tune most of the time, you often get a good sleep and wake up feeling refreshed. As a result, you feel energized to do your tasks throughout the day.
In addition, sleeping on the floor gives you a feeling of experiencing freedom from within. In effect, you feel stronger, energized, and motivated to accomplish as much as you can.
Jagadish “Jaggi” Vasudev, known for his honorific title Sadhguru, an advocate of spirituality and a yoga guru from India, understands that not everybody would easily adapt to sleeping on the floor.
He said many people suffer from colds and other pains after sleeping on the floor.
But he said that your body would get used to it eventually. It’s like being in a forest. You use all protective gear while you sleep in the first two days, but you will realize that you’d be fine by the next day, even after sleeping in the open.
Being on earth – sun, rain, or wind, is essential because you are a manifestation of what it is. Sadhguru believes in the importance of being and feeling one with nature.
He explains the importance of sleeping on the floor through an analogy about a farmer and God.
In his story, he relayed about how the farmer wanted to do things on his own – plant his corn crops with everything he thinks the crops need to the point of asking God exactly how much rain should fall before he does his job of plowing and caring for the crop.
Come harvest time, he had big corn with no seeds but only cobs. So God explained to the farmer that the crops need strong winds that the farmer did not ask.
These strong winds would prompt the good crops to grow their roots under the ground to have a better grip and grow stronger and fuller.
While sleeping on the bed is more comfortable, Sadhguru’s analogy reasons out that any discomfort you feel while sleeping on the floor will only make your sleep deeper.
And as a result, you become more relaxed and experience better wake-up days once you have gotten used to the practice.
2. It Keeps You Grounded
By sleeping on the floor, you will feel as if you are connected to the earth. Grounding helps you maintain healthy levels of positive charge.
Grounding or earthing is a practice considered therapeutic. It allows you to reconnect to the ground electrically.
The earth or ground contains electrical charges beneficial to your well-being. You can do many types of grounding practices, but sleeping on the floor is one of the easiest.
You can gain the benefits of the process even when you only lie on the floor (made with natural material eg wooden) or on any ground – sandy beach or grassy park.
You don’t have to sleep, especially when you are not sleepy but want to relieve yourself from stress or any kind of heaviness.
Always ensure you are safe whenever you do it. Take the necessary precautions all the time so that you won’t be harmed in the process.
Aside from lying on the ground or sleeping on the floor, you can perform grounding by submersing yourself in water or walking barefoot.
Grounding advocates say that water has the same effects as the physical earth when it comes to grounding. You can do it in the ocean or a clear lake by wading until you feel more relaxed but empowered.
If you are doing it on the ground or floor, you can use grounding equipment as part of your earthing therapy, such as grounding patches and bands, socks, blankets or sheets, and mats.
The focus of grounding – whether you intentionally do it or develop the habit of sleeping on the floor, is to reconnect to the earth. This is achieved as your electrical energy gets realigned.
3. It Gives You the Feeling Of Freedom From Within
You will instantly feel the difference the first time you try sleeping on the floor after being used to dozing off in a comfortable bed for so long.
It would feel as if you are no longer bound by the size of the bed or the shape of the pillow or mattress. You decide how you want to sleep without fearing that you might fall.
You would no longer feel trapped or confined, and even for a while, you’d experience how it’s like to break free from the shackles that bind you to your emotions and thoughts.
The process helps in developing a stronger connection between your mind and body. As you get used to it, you would hardly toss and turn at night, indicating that you are already comfortable with the position.
Through the days, you’d feel in control of how you sleep and how you think.
4. It May Give You a Stronger Connection To Your Faith
It doesn’t matter what your religious beliefs are; the practice may help you get in touch with your faith.
By choosing the ground instead of the comforts of the bed, you declare a commitment to purity like a true believer.
Sadhguru and Huffington both recommend washing your body before sleeping at night. Sadhguru advises taking lukewarm showers at night.
While it can make you feel alert, you will eventually doze off 20 or 30 minutes later. The practice will take away some burden and negativities in you so that you will sleep better.
On the other hand, Huffington advises taking a hot bath before sleeping. It’s like a ritual of water, which is a form of purification as it washes away whatever happened throughout your day.
