Some foods such as wheat, meat, and processed foods cause your body to produce acid. Too much acidity triggers conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and even autoimmune diseases.
When you eat alkaline foods, you protect your body against these conditions.
Most fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds plus legumes are alkaline-promoting foods. But the fastest way to alkalize your body is by taking natural alkaline supplements.
What Are Alkaline Supplements?
Alkaline supplements are foods that benefit overall health, increase energy, and much more.
Best to use in smoothies and juices, natural alkaline supplements are rich in nutrients and minerals e.g. vitamins, potassium, magnesium, iron, and others.
The human body is naturally alkaline with a blood pH of around 7.4. But if you add alkaline supplements to your smoothies, you can prevent a lot of known health issues such as diabetes, hypertension etc.
They help by reducing a person’s consumption of processed meats and fatty acids. Instead, they encourage people to eat healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.
If you want to avoid health complications, take alkaline-infused smoothies and juices.
Why It Is Important for Health To Consume Alkalizing Food?
The food you eat has an impact on a variety of health issues – from body composition to weight and bone health. If you want to lead a healthy life, your body’s pH matters.
By adding alkaline supplements to your smoothies or juices, you reduce stress and improve your health.
Your body is constantly seeking balance and it works to maintain a healthy alkaline zone. If you intake acid-forming foods, your body compensates by leaching calcium from your bones.
Over time, this leads to bone mineral loss and potentially osteoporosis. It can lead to increased cortisol levels (body’s stress hormone) too. This has damaging effects on your health.
Alkaline supplements are nutrient-dense and rich in antioxidants. By adding them to your smoothies and juices, you can fight inflammation and free radical damage.
They also help to slow down the leech of calcium from your bones allowing you to maintain your bone health.
As an athlete, acid-forming foods reduce muscle efficiency. As such, you’ve to spend more energy on every muscle contraction.
If you run a 10 K race or marathon, that means a lot of work.
Since alkaline supplements reduce inflammation, your muscles work normally. If you’re a strength athlete, you can lift heavy weights and recover faster.
Natural Alkaline Supplements To Have With Your Smoothie or a Juice
Here’s my 5 favorite alkaline supplements I add to a smoothie or juice for overall health.
Spirulina
Spirulina is one of the most popular supplements. It’s loaded with antioxidants and various nutrients beneficial to the brain and body. As a type of cyanobacteria, it’s packed with the following nutrients:
- Protein
- Vitamin B1, B2, b3
- Iron
- Copper
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Manganese
As one of the most nutritious foods on the planet, a tablespoon of spirulina provides around 1 gram of fat, including omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids.
Rich in antioxidants, it may improve muscle endurance and strength. Exercise-induced oxidative damage contributes to muscle fatigue.
Spirulina has inflammation-fighting and brain-protective properties. This is because it contains phycocyanin, a plant-based protein. Phycocyanin promotes blood cell regeneration and improves immune function.
Chlorella
Like spirulina, chlorella is a form of algae. There are over 30 different species, but only two types are commonly used in research:
- Chlorella vulgaris
- Chlorella pyrenoidosa
The algae have a hard cell wall. As such, humans can only take it as a supplement to reap its many benefits. It’s packed with nutrients such as:
- Protein – 50% to 60%
- Vitamin B12
- Vitamin C
- Iron
- Antioxidants
- Omega 3s
- Dietary fibre
Chlorella can enhance aerobic endurance. When athletes do endurance sports, their bodies are under a state of stress. As such, their immune system may be compromised.
Adding chlorella to your juice or smoothie boosts your immunity within the ideal recovery period. Basically, it helps your body return to baseline and adapt to the new training load.
Other abilities such as detoxification help to maintain optimized health. This is key for your body to recover adequately.
Wheatgrass
Wheatgrass is the latest natural alkaline supplement to enter the limelight.
Prepared from the freshly sprouted leaves of a wheat plant, it can bring some serious benefits to your body, for example: improving your immune system and detoxifying your liver.
As an excellent source of antioxidants, it helps fight free radicals that cause cell damage and oxidative stress in the body.
This improves muscle strength. As a superfood, it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
It can aid the body in getting rid of toxins and impurities. The chlorophyll in wheatgrass supports healthy liver function.
Once it cleanses your body, you should experience better health overall.
High in enzymes, wheatgrass aids in digestion. It helps your body break down food and absorb nutrients. This relieves digestive issues such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, and others.
Wheatgrass can improve your mental function thanks to its neuroprotective effects. This helps to prevent memory loss and enhance your cognitive function.
Barley Grass
Barley grass is the leaf of the barley plant. As a common ingredient at health stores and juice shops, it’s rich in:
- Fiber
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- Flavonoids
- Polyphenols
Regular consumption of the nutrient-dense supplement boosts your immune defense. A strong immune system vigilantly fights infections and prevents chronic inflammatory diseases.
Another benefit of barley grass is its protective action against cell destruction. It protects against the effects of UV radiation.
Basically, it extends a therapeutic relief on damaged cells thanks to the presence of enzymes.
Barley grass also acts defensively against radioactivity. This is due to its chlorophyll content. It improves radioactivity resistance and promotes the production of blood cells.
For this reason, it’s recommended to drink barley grass juice pre and post x-ray exposure.
Since it stimulates the regeneration of cells, it helps to reduce signs of aging. Phycocyanin, Vitamin B, iron, and chlorophyll support the creation of red and white blood cells.
By improving the bone marrow, barley grass reduces the signs of aging. This ensures that you have healthy and youthful skin.
Matcha Green Tea
Last but not least to join my top daily green alkaline supplements list is matcha green tea. It comes from the same plant as green tea but is grown differently and made from the whole green tea leaf.
Matcha has one of the highest amounts of natural antioxidants (about 10 times higher than the green tea itself), making it a great supporter against cancer due to its ability to fight free radicals.
Matcha thanks to a high concentration of L-theanine and caffeine is known for increasing energy levels, focus and concentration, and is a healthier alternative to coffee.
Matcha promotes relaxation and positive mood which can be helpful for those struggling with stress and anxiety.
Studies of matcha show it has a vast array of benefits on overall health including but not limited to liver health, heart health, immunity, anti-inflammatory and weight loss effects.
In addition, matcha green tea contains chlorophyll which helps to cleanse the body naturally and safely of harmful elements.
Interested in incorporating matcha in your daily diet? Like with any of the alkaline supplements listed above, just add it to your daily smoothie or a juice and enjoy its many health benefits every day.
Alkaline Supplements: Final Thoughts
The modern diet is more acid-producing and rich in refined sugars, sodium, and saturated fat. Too much acidic food increases the risk of heart disease, liver problems, and cancer.
They also increase mineral bone loss and lead to depression, dry skin, and mood swings.
Natural alkaline supplements are a great addition to your smoothies and juices. Packed with nutrients, they improve brain function, boost weight loss, improve your mood and focus.
It is best to use organic certified supplements for purity of ingredients so be sure the alkaline supplement you use is FDA-approved.

Great post. I read somewhere that baking soda in a glass of water raises the alkalinity of the body, but my wife puts that in the hot tub so it doesn’t sound like a good idea to me, will probably go with the spirulina!
Thank you so much and good luck with spirulina! 🙂
