“You have got to control your fear, get in control of your emotions” – Joe Teti
Taking control over your emotions with the emotional release technique or emotional freedom technique (EFT), also called tapping, will help you eliminate all negative emotions that cause you physical pain and sickness, such as chronic pain, disorders, emotional problems, addictions, post-traumatic disorder, and phobias.
For those who are not yet familiar with the concept of EFT or tapping, it is a blend of modern psychology, Chinese medicine, and neuroplasticity.
EFT focuses on stimulating the meridians, or the energy lines, where the prana (qi in Chinese medicine) or life force energy flows inside the body.
These pathways balance the energy that flows within us to maintain good health.
You can experience diseases, sickness, and emotional ups and downs if there is an imbalance in the energy lines.
There is also a counseling intervention while tapping to address specific issues in the body and rewire the brain with neuroplasticity.
Who Invented Tapping Therapy?
Gary Craig developed the tapping therapy technique based on Dr. Roger Callahan’s thought field therapy or TFT in 1990.
The concept of TFT requires you to tap a specific sequence of meridians, or the body’s energy pathways, depending on the problems experienced.
Craig observed inconsistencies with the tapping sequence, so he continuously improved the process by tapping the meridian points to balance energy and eliminate physical and emotional pain.
Since then, several studies and research have been conducted to expand the knowledge about EFT tapping further.
What Is the Tapping Process?
EFT uses one basic or straightforward sequence of points to tap regardless of the body condition or situation.
There are five steps involved in EFT tapping that you can follow, no matter what issues or conditions you are experiencing.
Step 1: Identify the Issue
You need to know what you are feeling, so you can focus on only one problem to resolve.
Step 2: Test the Intensity
You need to test the intensity level of your tapping. You can assess it using a scale of 0 to 10, wherein 10 is the worst level causing you more discomfort.
By setting up a ranking system, you can determine the effectiveness of the tapping method once done.
Step 3: Establish a Setup Phrase
While doing the tapping therapy, it is best to establish setup phrases to acknowledge your issues or problems, convey self-acceptance, and encourage you to change your current perspective in life.
It can be as simple as this:
“Even though I am currently struggling with (state your issue or condition), I deeply and completely accept myself.”
Feel free to rephrase this statement, depending on whatever you want to say to yourself as you tap.
Step 4: EFT Tapping Sequence
In this step, you will now start the proper tapping sequence while repeating your setup phrase. If you are tapping with a skilled EFT practitioner, they will be the one to carry out the procedure, and all you need to do is follow them.
But the sequence will remain the same.
Here’s how it goes:
Top of the Head (TOH): The TOH meridian point is a governing vessel. You can tap it using four fingers on the area from your ears to the top of the head.
Eyebrow (EB): It is the first meridian point and corresponds to the bladder. You can find it on the right side of the bone, where the eyebrow starts. You can tap it on one or both sides using your index and middle fingers about eight times.
Side of eye (SE): Near the eyebrow point, on the bone right at the corner of the eye is where the side of the eye meridian point lies. It corresponds with the gallbladder. To tap it, you can use your index and middle fingers.
Under-eye (UE): The under-eye is the stomach meridian. Gently tap the bone under your eye with your two fingers. Ensure you do not tap the area right under the eye since it is sensitive.
Under nose (UN): The under nose point is also a governing vessel. To tap this area, you can use two fingers and slightly turn it sideways to produce a gentler tap.
Chin (CH): The chin is a central vessel point. You can tap it using two fingers. You can turn your fingers sideways to lessen the tapping pressure.
Collarbone (CB): The collarbone points two inches below the collarbones and corresponds to the kidneys. To tap it, you can use all your five fingers. You can feel your body calming down whenever you tap this area.
Underarm (UA): The underarm point is about two to three inches below the armpit and corresponds with the spleen. To tap this part, you can use four fingers.
Karate chop (KC): The karate chop point or the side of the hand is where you can find the small intestine meridian. To tap it, you can use four fingers.
Step 5: Test the Final Intensity
Based on what you feel as you finish the tapping sequence, do you think there are some changes or differences in the intensity level from the initial level you have set?
If you believe you have not reached zero intensity level yet, continue repeating the process until you do.
Now that you know how tapping is done, you can realign your mind, body, and soul to release the tension that causes all the negative emotions.
In this way, you can push yourself forward to healing.

Many people still consider tapping a hoax or just an unconventional belief. Modern science does not dwell on alternative medicine or pseudoscience ideas and concepts.
Thus, they rejected the idea because there is no medical proof that meridians and acupressure points exist in the human body.
But that was then.
A study shows the existence of pericardium meridian lines using a blue-colored fluorescent dye.
It was injected into one of the acupressure points, and the findings show identified migrating pathways along those points.
There were also neural clusters from the nervous system that link to the veins and blood vessels clustered around the meridian points.
Thus, when you tap those points or put on acupressure needles, you stimulate the nerve endings in those clusters.
Another study was conducted in 2013 on the effect of EFT tapping on veterans with PTSD.
After several months of receiving regular EFT coaching sessions, the participants reportedly experienced lower psychological stress.
There were also many other stories from many people who became more successful in life after practicing the emotional release technique.
Since EFT relies on feedback from its practitioners, all these success stories become concrete evidence or proof that EFT does wonders for the human body.
As many people experience and witness the effectiveness of EFT tapping, it is now considered one of the most reliable alternative treatments for anxiety, depression, physical pain, and insomnia.
